ANNA SIGHED, RUBBING her hand over her eyes. She was tired. It had been a long day. It had snowed off and on for the past three days. It had finally tapered off late that evening, leaving almost two feet of snow on the ground when it was done.

William was recovering nicely. The first few days after he woke up he had slept most of the time. He had spent more awake today. He was so exhausted, he had fallen asleep after supper; but not before promising to play checkers with Thomas the next day. Thomas had been so excited that she’d thought he’d never get to sleep. would never go to sleep tonight, he was so excited.

She looked over at William as he slept, smiling as she watched his chest rise and fall. He was good to Thomas. He took time to listen to him. Earl never meant to be short; it was just his way, but she appreciated how William responded to him.

She blushed, thinking about how nice William treated her. He was always so polite and thankful; he even tried to pretend he was sleeping so she would rest. She knew he had been about to ask her something before Thomas came in from the barn earlier. There was a part of her that wanted to know what it was.

She sat in her chair, then leaned over and pulled her cello from its case.

She checked the tuning, and then played a soft melody she knew by heart. After a few minutes she paused to get a drink.

“That was beautiful...”

She jumped at the voice. William was awake, watching her from his bed.

“Was that Pachelbel?” He whispered.

“Canon in D.” She smiled, “How is the pain?” She placed the cello in its case and crossed the room. His face was back to a normal color; that was good.

“Thirsty... a little pain here and there.” He smiled, “You can keep playing though.”

Anna shook her head; she touched the back of her hand to his forehead, “Fever’s gone.” She stepped back, “I didn’t mean to wake you.”

He shrugged, “I was glad for it. I love hearing you play.”

She blushed, and immediately berated herself; was she going to blush every time he spoke to her? She poured him a glass of water, and handed it to him. “You need to drink.”

Accepting the glass he sipped lightly, then gestured to her with the glass. “Thank you.”

She stood there for a moment, trying to think of something to say as he slowly drank the water. Finally, she blurted, “Where are you from?”

He grinned, handing the cup back to her, “Isn’t that the thing you are never supposed to ask someone out west?”

She felt her face heat up again. Shaking her head, she took the glass and stepped away. “I’m sorry.”

“Mrs. Stanton, I wasn’t being serious. Really, I’m from all over. My father was in the Army.”

She stopped, turning slightly to face him. “I wasn’t upset, and please, call me Anna, not Mrs. Stanton.”

He nodded solemnly, “Yes Ma’am.
